Allergic conjunctivitis. Caused by eye irritants such as pollen, dust, animal dander in susceptible individuals. Allergic conjunctivitis can be seasonal (pollen) or appear in outbreaks throughout the year (dust and pet dander).


Conjunctivitis symptoms

The main symptom of conjunctivitis is a pink appearance of the eye. The other symptoms depend on the type of conjunctivitis that is contracted:


Viral conjunctivitis. Watery and itchy eyes; sensitivity to light. One or both eyes may be affected. It is highly contagious; it can be spread by coughing or sneezing.


Bacterial conjunctivitis. A yellowish or yellowish-green and sticky discharge is observed at the inner corner of the eye. In some cases, this discharge can be so abundant that it causes the eyelids to stick together when you wake up. One or both eyes may be affected. It is contagious (usually through direct contact with infected hands or items that have touched the eye).


Allergic conjunctivitis. Tearing, burning, itchy eyes; it can be accompanied by runny and stuffy nose, as well as sensitivity to light. Both eyes are affected. It is not contagious.

Treatment of conjunctivitis

As you might expect, treatment also depends on the type of conjunctivitis contracted:


Viral conjunctivitis. In most cases, viral conjunctivitis will run its course over a period of a few days without the need for medical treatment. Allergic conjunctivitis. Anti-allergy drugs often help prevent or shorten outbreaks of allergic conjunctivitis. Sometimes it is necessary to start this treatment before the season of allergies or allergy flares begins. Consult your doctor for details.
